Our History

In 1887, the Christ Child Society was founded in Washington, D.C. by Miss Mary Virginia Merrick.  Mary was confined to a wheelchair after a terrible fall.  That didn’t stop her from doing God’s work, however.  She spent her time sewing infant’s clothing for needy children and encouraging friends and family to do the same.  From her spirit and dedication, the Christ Child Society was born. There are currently over 7,000 members nationwide with 39 chapters in 17 states and in Washington, D.C.  The Christ Child Society of Atlanta is the first chapter in Georgia.  We represent the growing need to serve the underprivileged children in our major cities.

Archbishop John F. Donoghue expressed his enthusiasm in a letter to the Atlanta chapter.  “I am very well aware of that society.  It was very active in the Archdioceses of Washington, D.C. where I grew up and spent most of my priesthood,” he wrote.  “I learned a great deal in those days about Mary Virginia Merrick, its founder.”  I would love to see a chapter of the Christ Child Society get started here in the Archdiocese of Atlanta and I will encourage you in every way I can.”

We were chartered at the national convention in April, 2004, representing 80 charter members.  The legacy of this 118 year old charity is carried on through the second and third generation.  While some members are continuing a family legacy, others are joining as a new calling.  The first Christ Child Society of Atlanta membership luncheon was held in November, 2003.  Our second annual membership luncheon will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2004 at the Dunwoody Country Club. We want to thank our members and donors for contributions throughout the previous year.

"Nothing is ever too much to do for a child."

Mary Virginia Merrick (1866-1955)
